One
of the cultural attractions in Denpasar City is the presence of Sang Hyang
Jaran in Banjar Bun, Denpasar, Bali. This Sang Hyang Jaran dance has been
around since 1905.

It’s
worth noting that Banjar Bun is located in Dangin Puri Village, East Denpasar
District. The staging of this sacred dance is carried out during the ceremony
of Karya Nangunang Ida Ratu Pragina Sanghyang Jaran. The event aims to preserve
and conserve the sacred art of Sang Hyang Jaran dance, which is believed to
have existed since 1905 in this community.

Manggala
Karya, Mangku Wayan Sugiana, who is a cultural custodian and also a civil
servant in Badung Regency, as reported by the Denpasar City Government’s
website, revealed that historically, the creator of the Sang Hyang Jaran Dance
in Banjar Bun was Jero Mangku Selonog.

This
sacred dance has been a part of Banjar Bun community life for over a century.
The series of events includes sacred rituals such as matur piuning, guru piduka
at Merajan Jro Mangku Selonog, and ngadegin pragina and nyanjan procession.

According
to Jro Mangku Sugiana, the Karya Nangunang Ida Ratu Pragina Sanghyang Jaran
procession in Banjar Bun coincides with the Buda Kliwon Gumbreg holy day.

In
this fifth generation, there are nine selected pragina individuals who play a
crucial role in preserving this cultural heritage. The offering also involves
both male and female dancers.

The
procession begins with pamuspan at Merajan Banjar Bun, followed by the nudus or
nuwur Ida Ratu Pragina in front of the palinggih Ida Ratu Begawan Penyarikan
Merajan Banjar Bun. Subsequently, Ida Ratu Pragina presents katuran mapajar or
masolah lan masiram ring gni as part of the richly meaningful cultural ritual.
